Information about the Coronavirus

A coronavirus is a type of virus. As a group, coronaviruses are common across the world. Coronaviruses are a large family of respiratory viruses that can cause diseases ranging from the common cold to the Middle-East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

Typical symptoms of coronavirus include fever and a cough that may progress to a severe pneumonia causing shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

Coronavirus can cause more severe symptoms in people with weakened immune systems, older people, and those with long-term conditions like diabetes, cancer and chronic lung disease.

 

Wuhan novel coronavirus is a new strain of coronavirus first identified in Wuhan City, China. Based on current evidence, Wuhan novel coronavirus presents with flu-like symptoms including a fever, a cough, or difficulty breathing. Current evidence is that most cases appear to be mild, but those with pre-existing health conditions remain at higher risk.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) standard recommendations for the general public to reduce exposure to and transmission of a range of illnesses include the following, notably hand and respiratory hygiene, and safe food practices:

​

  • Frequently clean hands thoroughly by using alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water least 20 seconds. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

  • When coughing and sneezing cover mouth and nose with flexed elbow or tissue – throw tissue away immediately and wash hands

  • Avoid close contact with anyone who has fever and cough

Wear a face mask if you show signs of symptoms or around others who do, when in the same room with other people or when visiting a healthcare provider

  • If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing seek medical care early. It is important to also share any recent travel history with your health care provider

  • When visiting live markets in areas currently experiencing cases of novel coronavirus, avoid direct unprotected contact with live animals and surfaces in contact with animals.

  • The consumption of raw or undercooked animal products should be avoided. Raw meat, milk or animal organs should be handled with care, to avoid cross-contamination with uncooked foods, as per good food safety practices.
